June 24, 2011 | Introduction to Internal Family Systems Therapy
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is at the forefront of a
movement in psychotherapy toward a more collaborative approach that relies on clients’ intuitive wisdom. One of the fastest growing approaches in the field today, IFS offers a clear, non-pathological, and empowering understanding of human problems and philosophy of practice that allows both therapist and client to enter the nourishing state of flow in which healing occurs. IFS practices are designed to release the compassion, curiosity, and creativity that lie beneath the protective parts of our clients so as to bring open-hearted healing to themselves and their relationships with family members. In that process, they are able to unload the extreme beliefs, emotions, and sensations that burden their lives, allowing the best in themselves to fully shine. IFS offers a simple yet sophisticated integration of intra-psychic and family theory and technique, and of psychology and spirituality. Infused with practical takeaways for your everyday client work, this program will include didactic learning, demonstrations and experiential learning to introduce therapists to this powerful and elegant healing modality. Intended as an introductory workshop for mental health professionals, experienced IFS practitioners are welcome to attend for review and deepening of their learning.
Learning Objectives (Day 1)
Upon completion of this workshop, participants should be able to:
- identify the essential features and therapeutic goals of the IFS model
- describe the basic assumptions of IFS regarding non-pathological multiplicity of mind, inner systems, and the concept of “Self”
- identify the 3 categories of sub-personalities that most often present in therapy: Manager parts, Firefighter parts & Exile parts
- apply basic techniques to help clients achieve Self-leadership
Saturday, June 25, 2011 | The Unbroken Self: Healing Trauma & Attachment Wounds with Internal Family Systems
The Internal Family Systems model (IFS) has become a popular approach to treating trauma because it provides solutions to many problems that trauma therapists face. By showing respect and appreciation for the traumatized client’s protective parts, it reduces resistance and backlash. IFS facilitates affect regulation in a simple, effective way so clients are not overwhelmed during sessions, while also offering a gentle way to help clients unburden the extreme beliefs and emotions accrued from traumas so that clients often leave sessions feeling lighter rather than labile. In IFS, it is the client’s Self that is leading the healing, thus reducing transference and empowering the client. Therapists are free to be themselves, and come to enjoy partnering with the fascinating and sacred process that naturally unfolds as clients heal themselves. This workshop will include practical ways to work effectively with trauma and attachment issues, including a lens through which to understand the parallels between internal and external attachment styles. The day will include didactic teaching as well as experiential exercises and live/video demonstrations. Appropriate for mental health practitioners familiar with IFS essentials, including those who will attend the June 24 introductory workshop.
Learning Objectives (Day 2)
Upon completion of this workshop, participants should be able to:
- identify the effects of trauma on parts and Self
- identify the parallels between external & internal attachment styles
- deal with client “resistance” more effectively and with less effort
- utilize the clients’ Self to repair attachment injuries
- utilize the IFS model in treating trauma
